After years of being steeped in the diet mentality and working from a weight-centric approach, I believe that diets do not work. Diets rob you of your autonomy and lead only to frustration and obsession. But, it is possible to reject the diet mentality and get your life back. I know. I have done it.

My childhood, education, and entire career were weight-centric and entrenched in the diet mentality. I grew up in the 1980s when fat was the villain. My father always struggled with his weight and a low-fat diet seemed like the answer at the time. I remember going grocery shopping with my mom and trying to find foods with as little fat as possible. None of those efforts worked and my father passed away when I was 10 years old after his fourth heart attack. And so, when I decided I wanted to be a dietitian, my ultimate goal was to help people lose weight. I wanted to help them find peace and happiness and, just as my father had thought, I thought that was all about the number on the scale. But after becoming a dietitian, getting a job, and working in weight management, I hated it. I watched as people would make the changes I suggested and lose some weight but most of them regained the weight in time. Their lives were spent chasing after a lower number on the scale, always in search of something else. I felt helpless and started to lose my passion for nutrition and dietetics. I knew, deep down, that diets do not work.  But I did not know what did. I seriously considered leaving dietetics all together.

I then came across the Intuitive Eating audiobook. As I began to listen, things just started to click.  I realized how many of my “healthy” behaviors were actually disordered and I had been under-eating and over-exercising to control my body size since I was a teenager. I realized how much controlling my body and focusing on weight had robbed me of my life.  And the more I learned, I could not look back. 

I went on to create the TRUST Method which is based on the Intuitive Eating framework. This process will transform your mindset and relationship to food, body, and movement. You will finally be able to live the life of your dreams, focusing on improving your health through self-care not restriction.
